In 2015, thanks to the tireless efforts of KENYA’s Northern Rangelands Trust (www.nrt-kenya.org), the 54,000-hectare Sera Rhino Sanctuary was established on the Sera Conservancy – the first such community-owned sanctuary in the country, providing 24-hour security for 11 highly endangered black rhinos. From February, the Saruni portfolio of lodges is offering the only walking safari to track the rhino in east Africa, at new Saruni Rhino (www.sarunisamburu.com; from $630), a tiny two-banda camp two hours’ drive north of the main Saruni Samburu lodge. Guides and rangers with GPS transmitters walk guests to within metres of the animals – a once-in-a-lifetime experience made all the more singular, and poignant, by their extreme vulnerability.
